Her day job was with the Microbiology section of a food and water testing laboratory. We both transferred here late summer 1993 along with several others. I got on her good side for two reasons. First, there was some mystique about us transferees to the San Antonio lab. She was (in hushed tones) “The African” from the Maryland lab. I was the mass spec specialist from the San Francisco lab.
She arrived 2 weeks later than the rest of us transferees. I had time to check out the bookstores in San Antonio. This was before the mega stores like Borders and Barnes & Noble. By the time she arrived I was getting around to all the spiritual type bookstores. I was somewhat jaded or spoiled coming from San Francisco-Berkeley (Fields on Polk, Shambala on Telegraph).
Unlimited Thought Bookstore on Blanco was the biggest thing here in the northern half of the city. I suggested that she go there to see about doing Readings. The woman who ran the bookstore had Louise audition on the spot; it did not go well. That was the end of that. The woman seemed more interested in libertarian ideas than in psychic readings. “We have something to offend everyone” she smiled. Their bookstore was decent sized and well stocked though.
Meanwhile, a Laura opened the Awareness Center at 8800 Broadway, a couple blocks north of 410. I went there on a Saturday right after they opened. It was new and not much of a bookstore. But I told Louise to go there to see about doing Readings. She hit it off well with Laura and started working there almost immediately, Thursday evenings and all day Saturday. Louise complained that as a part-timer she had to work sitting in a chair in the hallway, while the full-timers had desks in rooms. But she made a lot of friends and was off to a good start in San Antonio. Jim Watson from England and Lance Rodriguez were practitioners there and became helpful reliable friends. All this happened within a couple months of her moving here. The Awareness Center eventually closed, but Louise had established herself in SA. She has been thanking me ever since for turning her on to the place. dh
When she first transferred here she took the city bus to get to around (as was common back on the East Coast). With her added income she got a new car in that first year. The second year she had a new house built in the Candlewood subdivision near Wagner H.S. Her friend Shelley who worked for Southwest Airlines helped with all the decisions and options at the model home. In the next few years she had the carpet replaced with vinyl/linoleum flooring, added a covered deck and built a Meditation Garden in the back yard.

Anonymous June 12, 2024 at 5:54 PM Louise you will be missed at the Laboratory from ALL your old friends there
Anonymous June 22, 2024 at 7:08 AM Louise, my dear, dear friend for 40+ years! You’ve left this world so suddenly, without much warning to those of us who truly depend on you for your prayers, goodwill and support. You were a truly gifted spiritualist who care for people, and was always there for your many friends. It has always been your wish to return to Liberia and establish a Center to nurture the world, with you at the helm of bringing everyone together. It is sad that you’ve departed before fulfilling those wishes, but rest assured that you will be managing and compassing us from heaven as we maneuver this earth to make sure your wishes are met. Bon arrive in Liberia, my friend. May your gifted soul rest in peace. Amen.
